چکیده

NEW YORK—Scientists at Columbia University’s Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute, Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC), and the Université Paris Descartes have found that deficits in social memory—the inability to recognize familiar faces and a feature of psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia—may be due to a decrease in the number of a particular class of brain cells, called inhibitory neurons, in a little-explored region within the brain’s memory center.

Age-Dependent Specific Changes in Area CA2 of the Hippocampus and Social Memory Deficit in a Mouse Model of the 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome

Several neuropsychiatric disorders are associated with cognitive and social dysfunction. Postmortem studies of patients with schizophrenia have revealed specific changes in area CA2, a long-overlooked region of the hippocampus recently found to be critical for social memory formation. To examine how area CA2 is altered in psychiatric illness, we used the Df(16)A(+/-) mouse model of the 22q11.2 ...

Fusion Pore Dynamics Are Regulated by Synaptotagmin•t-SNARE Interactions

Exocytosis involves the formation of a fusion pore that connects the lumen of secretory vesicles with the extracellular space. Exocytosis from neurons and neuroendocrine cells is tightly regulated by intracellular [Ca2+] and occurs rapidly, but the molecular events that mediate the opening and subsequent dilation of fusion pores remain to be determined. A putative Ca2+ sensor for release, synap...

Local Ca2+ Release from Internal Stores Controls Exocytosis in Pituitary Gonadotrophs

Exocytosis and the cell-averaged cytosolic [Ca2+], [Ca2+]i, were tracked in single gonadotrophs. Cells released 100 granules/s at 1 microM = [Ca2+]i when gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) activated IP3-mediated Ca2+ release from internal stores, but only 1 granule/s when [Ca2+]i was raised uniformly to 1 microM by other means. Strong exocytosis was then seen only at higher [Ca2+]i (half-max...

Visual Pigment Phosphorylation but Not Transducin Translocation Can Contribute to Light Adaptation in Zebrafish Cones

The ability of cone photoreceptors to adapt to light is extraordinary. In this study we evaluated two biochemical processes, visual pigment phosphorylation and transducin translocation, for their ability to contribute to light adaptation in zebrafish cones. Since cytoplasmic Ca2+ regulates light adaptation, the sensitivities of these processes to both light and Ca2+ were examined. Cytoplasmic C...

Modification of Nifedipine Inhibitory Effect on Calcium Spike and L-Type Calcium Current by Ethanol in F1 Neuron of Helix aspersa

There is strong evidence demonstrating that nifedipine dissolved in ethanol selectively inhibits only L-type Ca2+ current. In addition, acute ethanol exposure reduces voltage-dependent calcium currents. In the present study, we investigated the antagonistic effect of fixed concentration of nifedipine dissolved in different concentration of ethanol on L-type Ca2+ current. In a Na+-K+ free soluti...
